Pilot Details

The Alberta Land Readiness Tool is being developed to help municipalities better understand which lands are positioned for development, what may be holding other sites back, and where action could help unlock new opportunities.

Three Alberta municipalities will help us test and refine the approach using their own land, data and development context. Each selected community will receive approximately $30,000 in grant-funded technical support, including a locally applied Land Readiness Tool, GIS-based analysis and practical support to identify pathways for priority development opportunities.

The goal is to build something municipalities can actually use: a clearer way to connect planning, infrastructure, market conditions and development realities so communities can make more informed decisions about where to focus next.

Know what you have. Know what could move.

Land readiness is not just a planning question. It is an economic development opportunity.

A clearer picture of development-ready land can help municipalities have stronger conversations with developers, landowners and investors, identify where infrastructure investment could unlock growth, and better position and communicate the development opportunities already within their community.

Find | Identify land with strong development potential.
Understand | See the barriers affecting individual sites.
Prioritize | Focus resources and infrastructure decisions where they can matter most.
Unlock | Identify practical steps that could move land closer to development.

We aren’t looking for three communities to simply receive the tool. We are looking for three communities to help shape it.

The Land Readiness Tool is being built for Alberta municipalities, which means it needs to work in real municipal conditions.

Pilot communities will apply the approach using their own data, land and development context. Along the way, we want you to tell us where it works, where it gets complicated, what information is difficult to access and what would make the tool more useful.

You help us find the bumps. We work through them together.

At the end, your municipality gets a Land Readiness Tool informed by your own community, and Alberta gets a stronger tool because you helped us build it.

What we need from pilot communities

Bring us your data, local knowledge and candid feedback.

We will need selected municipalities to connect us with the right staff, share available information, help us interpret local development conditions and tell us where the tool works, where it gets messy and what could make it better.

You do not need perfect data or a sophisticated GIS program to be a strong pilot.

How the pilot works

1. Bring the pieces together
We work with your team to understand your development context and gather available municipal data.

2. Put the tool to work
We apply the readiness framework to real land and test the results with municipal staff.

3. Refine and move forward
Together, we identify opportunities, work through the gaps and use what we learn to strengthen both your local tool and the broader Alberta approach.
